We act as planning agent for Thornton Manor Country Estate Ltd and have been devising a planning strategy to save this significant heritage asset, the first part of which has been to submit a crucial planning application to Wirral Council. This application seeks temporary permission to reinstate three event marquees on the historic Thornton Manor Estate. However, its significance goes far beyond the structures themselves.
Thornton Manor, a Grade II* Listed Building set within a Registered Park and Garden of the same grade, is listed on Historic England’s “Heritage at Risk” register and is located within the Green Belt. A devastating fire in 2022 caused substantial damage to parts of its historic fabric, leaving the Estate in urgent need of preservation. In the challenging post-pandemic economic climate, timely action to secure funding for essential repairs is more important than ever.
This planning application is the first pivotal step in a complex restoration process. The finance that the business will be able to secure represents a lifeline, enabling vital roof repairs, stabilisation works and conservation activities to preserve and enhance the estate for future generations.
As the planning agent, we have worked closely with the Estate owners, Donald Insall Associates and other technical specialists to develop a carefully considered and policy-compliant proposal.
This planning application is a crucial step towards securing the future of Thornton Manor, not only as a historic landmark but as a cherished and integral part of our community.
Having the opportunity to reinstate the marquees will enable us to secure the necessary funding to restore and preserve the estate for future generations.
Thornton Manor holds a special place in the hearts of many, a place steeped in history and significance. With this support, we will ensure its legacy continues for generations to come, benefiting both the local community and all who cherish this remarkable estate.
– Philip Cowan, Caretaker and Owner
This is not just about temporary event structures. It’s about helping an irreplaceable landmark navigate a period of crisis and emerge resilient. Thornton Manor is a place rich in history; community value and cultural significance and we are pleased to help navigate the complex planning balance across enabling development; heritage significance and protecting Green Belt openness. With the right planning permissions and investment, it should be possible to save this important asset to be enjoyed for decades to come.
We look forward to supporting this inspiring recovery journey and playing our part in protecting heritage for the benefit of all.
